Homo sapiens is the scientific name for modern man (it means wise man) and developed from another homo species (sorry I don’t know which one, may be one of the other scientist knows) about 200,000 years ago in Africa. In time eventually homo sapiens with develop into another species.
There are quite few “species” designations in the genus Homo that could be argued to be the immediate predecessor to Homo sapiens in the timeline of human evolution. However, most are similar to Homo erectus, and come from only small amounts of evidence, so the best evidence-based answer we have is that it was a broad-definition Homo erectus. Homo neanderthalensis (i.e. Neanderthals) doesn’t fit into this timeline, as it’s thought that Homo erectus was the common ancestor of both Homo sapiens and Homo neanderthalensis, i.e. that the Homo erectus lineage split in two and one branch evolved into humans, the other into neanderthals.
