I’m not working in the lab today but at my desk. I just had a meeting with a colleague about inbreeding (when closely related animals mate) and how best to measure it in wild animals populations. I’m interested because the Galapagos sea lion population is small and it’s possible that they are inbred. Inbreeding affects immunity, so it might mean they are more at risk from disease.

Today, I have also not been in the lab as such. I’m currently writing up some research for a paper. I’m hoping that I’ll get into the lab later this afternoon though and will put some reactions on to make some new crystals. Oooo… actually I’ve got a reaction in the oven at the minute… I should go and check on that!

Today, I had a meeting with a statistician about some data, I spend time online answering IAS questions and prepared stuff for the next three days when I’ll have five volunteers coming in in the mornings.

Having IAS chats and answering questions! Fortunately, today is telescope maintenance day, so it’s a bit quieter. I also had to fit in a couple of meetings and in about half an hour we’ll be starting the telescope up again so I have to catch up on putting together the programme of observations for the next few days.

Absolutly nothing, I am on holiday. I had a lazy day in the garden, apart from doing a live chat with two schools.
Last week I was looking after two MSc students who were measuring what percentage of blood was made up of red blood cells. Then we added plasma (the watery part of blood) to the blood to make it thiner. We were checking to see if my dried blood spots give the wrong answer for thin blood. My students know the answer already but I will not know until I go back to work next week.
