The broadness of science; that I can read a paper about deep sea ecology, followed by a paper on the proteins in the membranes of blood cells, followed by a paper on the politics of conservation.

Doing thinks (experiments) that no body has done before, in an attempt to answer a question. Its always something different

Asking a question. Then finding the answer piece by piece. Building up a big picture of what’s going on and then being able to look back and understand the answer to that question.
For example I make a new material. It’s a powder and I have no idea how the atoms that make it up are arranged, and that’s my question: what is the structure of this material? So I gather evidence from lots of techniques (using X-rays, seeing how it behaves when it’s heated, using other techniques to work out what elements are in there). I then put all this evidence together to build a picture and tell the story of my material. That story is my answer but the way you get there, piece by piece, if fascinating.
